Solidarity and Condemnation Statement
Solidarity and Condemnation Statement on the Quota Reform Movement and Attacks on Student Protesters in Bangladesh
We, the Bangladeshi student community at the University of Illinois Chicago, are very worried about the recent attacks on peaceful protesters in Bangladesh who are asking for changes to the quota system in government jobs. Recent events have shown that police and members of the Students League have attacked students violently. There are reports of police using tear gas and rubber bullets on students who were protesting peacefully. Sadly, six people, including a student, have died due to these violent actions, and many others have been injured. This is absolutely unacceptable and goes against our constitutional rights and the spirit of our fight for independence.
The protests are about concerns over the public sector job quota policy, which reserves 30% of jobs for the families of freedom fighters. While we respect the importance of honoring those who fought for our independence, we believe that the quota system should be fair and based on merit.
As students who believe in democracy and human rights, we strongly condemn the use of excessive force against peaceful protesters. We call on the authorities in Bangladesh to respect the right of citizens to protest without fear. The government must protect the safety of demonstrators.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives during these protests and offer our condolences to the families affected. Their bravery in seeking justice and equality will not be forgotten. We, the Bangladeshi students of UIC, stand with you. We urge the government to talk with protesters to address their concerns about the job quota system. Authorities must also investigate and bring to justice those responsible for the violence.
To our fellow students and citizens in Bangladesh, you are not alone in your fight for justice and equality. Your strength inspires us, and we stand in solidarity with you.
In solidarity,
